Effective Wastewater Management

As part of our focussed water strategy, we remain cognisant of the importance of responsible management of wastewater – from generation to final disposal. Our efforts are centred around reduction, recycling/reuse, and safe treatment, with the aim to minimise environmental and human health impacts.

Prevention / Reduction
Operational modifications to reduce wastewater generation at source; process segregation to avoid quality deterioration; water-efficient housekeeping and utility practices
Recycling / Reuse
Onsite ETP/STP upgrades to boost recovery; reuse for non-potable operations (e.g., dust suppression, horticulture) wherever technically feasible and compliant
Treatment
Compliance with applicable discharge standards; periodic performance checks of treatment units; sludge handling and disposal in accordance with regulations
Disposal
Environmentally responsible disposal only when reuse is not viable, continuous exploration of further reuse opportunities

Performance & Disclosures

We undertake regular assessments of our operational sites to evaluate water availability, quality, regulatory requirements, and community considerations. These assessments help identify risks and opportunities, and facilitate targeted interventions.

We disclose our approach and performance in alignment with GRI 303 (Water and Effluents) and the CEO Water Mandate communication pillars. Our monitoring framework captures:

Total water withdrawal by source (surface water, municipal, groundwater, rainwater/other non-competing sources)
Total water consumption (including process and evaporative losses) and intensity (ML/crore)
Total water discharge by destination/quality
Share of withdrawal from non-competing sources and share from surface water bodies
Sites in high or extremely high water-stress areas and associated mitigation actions
Wastewater treated, reused, and responsibly disposed
Compliance with permits/consents and incident reporting

Community & Stakeholder Collaboration

Recognising the unique water-related challenges of each locality, we work closely with municipalities, local communities, and civil society to co-create impactful solutions. The initiatives include:

Rainwater harvesting and watershed strengthening projects near our ports
Community WASH (Water, Sanitation, Hygiene) initiatives, with a focus on schools and health centres
Awareness campaigns on efficient water use and conservation practices
Support for public infrastructure (e.g. storage, distribution, last-mile delivery) in alignment with local priorities
Transparent engagement with public authorities on water-related issues and performance

Expand smart metering, real-time dashboards, and automated alerts for leakage and abnormal consumption

Enhance storage capacities and drought-response protocols at water-stressed ports; integrate climate scenarios into local water planning
Design for efficiency
Embed water-efficient design in new projects and major upgrades, targeting lifecycle reductions in intensity

Deepen supplier capability-building on water efficiency and wastewater compliance in priority categories

Continue alignment with the CEO Water Mandate and GRI, and strengthen disclosure on site-level actions and outcomes
