Mundra Port sets a new record in coal handling in India
Adani Ports & SEZ Ltd, India’s largest port developer and part of Adani Group, a global integrated player, today said its Mundra port had handled 151,229 metric tonnes of steam coal in 24 hours, thus setting a new national record in coal cargo handling in the country. The Mundra Port’s West Basin terminal, Asia’s largest coal import facility, surpassed the last recorded best coal discharge performance nationally of 122,247 metric tonnes and further surpassed its own record of 115,119 metric tonnes in January 2012. The current handling capacity of west port is 60 MMT of coal per annum. “This is a great milestone for Mundra port and the credit goes to our state of the art mechanized automated safe facilities and to our young employees who have toiled day and night to ensure that West Basin emerges as the best coal import terminal in the world. It is designed to handle coal that can feed most of the Indian power plants and therefore play an important role in the country’s power generation,“ said Mr G J Rao, Director, Adani Ports & Special Economic Zone Ltd.
Mundra Port is today India’s number one multi-cargo port and has an annual handling capacity of 180 million tones. Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone also operates ports in Hazira and Dahej, in Gujarat and is setting up coal handling facilities in Mormugao in Goa, Visakhapatnam in Andhra Pradesh and at Kandla Port in Gujarat. The company plans to handle 200 million tonnes of cargo by 2020.
